"When I said YES to the invitation to go Ghana in 2015 for the Thanksgiving holiday, I could not have guessed how much it would have changed me and I would return at least once every year after".
Tamaya Walker, SAS Founder
The joyful energy of Ghana lay at odds with the negative messaging that defines Africa’s portrayal across Western media. We’re often fed these images of African children with swollen bellies and flies buzzing around their heads, which is not an accurate representation of the culture and what is actually happening. Granted, there are places where there is famine, but in Accra and other cities in Ghana there’s such a rich sense of spirit and happiness—and a lot of development is going on too.
Going to Ghana offered me the chance to connect with my roots and reclaim the heritage my family had been denied. As a black person living in America, I’ve often felt disconnected from a sense of identity or felt like I had to take on an identity that was given to me. Slavery erased so much of our culture. Returning to the Ghana has put pieces together and allowed me to rediscover myself.
This years SAS Ghana Experience coincided with a painful anniversary: 400 years since the first recorded landing of a slave ship, in Jamestown, Virginia which began the Middle Passage, the forcible transport of enslaved Africans and the start of a shared and tragic history that would change the lives of millions. This was the “Year of Return”. We Returned and walked through the "Door of No Return".
