GHANA
August 7 - 14, 2020
The president of Ghana dedicated 2019 as the Year Of Return. If you missed that trip, we’re going again in 2020! Our founder, Tamaya and your Ghana host has been going to Ghana since 2015. After her first visit she knew Ghana would be a Sisters and Suitcases Experience because the rhythm of Ghana is irresistible from the moment you exit the plane. Rich in culture and history, Ghana is the first African country to gain independence from European colonial rule. It is also the recognized home of the distinguished Asante kingdom and the warrior Queen Mother, Yaa Asantewaa. Live as they live for a couple of days. Learn from the past while you bask in the present. Taste, see, feel, smell and hear all that the Gold Coast has to offer. And get in touch with your roots so that you can determine your future.

ITINERARY
Day 1 - Departure
Today you will depart your USA city or or Country on an international flight to Accra, Ghana Day 2 – Arrival and Welcome “Akwaaba” (Welcome) Upon arrival in Accra, you’ll be warmly greeted and transferred from Kotoka International Airport to your hotel where you will settle in for the next couple of days. Relax by the pool or sip a cocktail. Later that evening you’ll get to know everyone at the meet-n-greet and be welcomed with a cultural welcome dinner featuring authentic Ghanaian cuisine (can you say Jollof rice?) Day 3 – Accra City Tour “Ye wo krom” (We’re in town) Following breakfast, you will explore Jamestown, High Street and the lighthouse. This 139-year-old city has a blend of colonial and modern architecture that summarize her history. You'll visit the W. E. B. Dubois Centre for Pan African Culture where W.E.B Dubois and his wife remains are and learn the missions of great leaders such as Maya Angelou and Malcolm X, who traveled throughout Ghana to witness the works of Pan African leaders. After lunch you will shop for fabrics for your tailor made outfits. This evening after enjoying your meal you will be introduced to Ghana's nightlife. Day 4 - City of Kumasi and Ashanti Craft Villages Pack your bags we are heading to Kumasi, the seat of the Ashanti Empire to explore the legends of the famous Ashantis. One of the villages you will experience is the Kente Village. This is where the art of weaving across Africa dates back some 300 years and Kente the distinctive cloth to the Ashanti has roots in the 17th century. At this village, you learn about how it’s made, and can even try your hand at making it yourself or grab a few yards to have something custom made. We will make a few other stops along the way. Day 5 - Manhyia Palace After breakfast and checkout you will visit Manhyia Palace Museum, to obtain firsthand information on the legacies of the Ashanti kingdom. A regal history that dates back to the 1700's. This palace complex is the official residence of the Asantehene of Asanteman, or the king of the Ashanti kingdom. Day 6 – Cape Coast Slave Dungeon “Yen ye abu-sua fo” (We are family) After breakfast we will check out of the hotel for a scenic drive to Cape Coast, known for its role in the Atlantic slave trade. Cape Coast was a major hub for the slave trade, these structures were the last “home” for enslaved Africans before they were transported to the Americas. We’ll visit the Cape Coast Castle, built in 1653 and the Door of No Return, which is believed to be one of the final exit points for many men, women and children from Africa being brought to the Americas. You’ll walk away with an experience and history lesson you won’t get in any textbook. This castle also houses the West African Historical Museum established by the Smithsonian Institute in collaboration with the Ghanaian Government in 1994. After dinner we will end the day in reflection around the bonfire. Day 7 – Kakum National Park “Maa-kye” (Good morning) Rise and shine for a drive through the historic Denkyira Kingdom to Kakum National Park, one of West Africa’s surviving tropical rain forests. Kakum is one of only two canopy walks on the continent. It’s also home to the famous hanging canopies that line the treetops. After lunch the remainder of the day is at your leisure. Day 8 – Depart to USA “Nan-te Yie” (Safe Journey) In Ghana there’s no Twi word for “goodbye,” and SAS believes in, "see you later." Before we bid our farewells we will eat and sip one last time together at our Farewell Lunch. After lunch we’ll escort you to the airport for your safe return. But no worries, you’ll have a plethora of mental memories to ponder on during the flight back home and we’ll be sure to share photos with you. |
